この著名なアメリカ西部の「短期大学」の応募締め切りは11月5日だ。一次選考結果は12月中旬に判明する。
高校での成績が突出している高校生が「応募すべき」「短期大学である。
ＴＯＥＦＬ（ＩＥＬＴＳ）のスコアは必要だがＳＡＴ（ＡＴＣ）のスコア提出はオプショナルなのでＳＡＴ対策が間に合いそうもない「成績優秀者」にはおあつらえ向きである。英語でのコミュニケーション能力は何とかしなければならないだろうが、ＳＡＴ対策よりは簡単なはずだ。「数学オリンピック、化学オリンピックに入賞したことがある高校生やプログラミング大会で入賞したことがある高校生」あるいは「スポーツの全国大会で活躍した成績優秀な高校生」などが応募者に相応しいだろう。
東大、京大を目指す高校生の中には勘違いでカリフォルニアのcommunity collegeを経由してUC-BerkeleyやUCLAを目指そうとするが、それは誤りだ。「突出した学力、能力」をありきたりのcommunity collegeで2年間も埋没させること自体、高速で変貌する時代には時代遅れなのだ。このDeep Springs Collegeに応募するべきなのである。この「短期大学」の卒業生であれば米国のトップ大学は諸手を挙げてTransfer生として歓迎するはずである。
100年間の期間の卒業生は、なんとわずか1200名しかいない。定員は14名のみの「超エリート」集団の大学である。今まで、応募者数は少ない時で18０名、多い時で３１５名だったそうだ。在籍者の２０％が外国人だそうだ。日本人の卒業者はおそらくゼロ。卒業後は4年制大学に編入するのが一般的で、編入先はYale, Brown, Stanford, UC Berkeley, University of Chicagoが多いそうだ。2年間の学費は全額免除である。2006年2月2日号のCourrier Japonで詳しく紹介されている。Ｅｃｏｎｏｍｉｓｔの紹介記事もある。 プリンストンレビューの紹介は、こちらだ。
エッセー提出が必須だ。 four essays of no more than 2400 words in total。その他、①demographic informationｍ②official academic transcripts from any secondary schools,も提出が必要だ。二次選考もあるので、非常に面倒ではある。
In mid-December, you will be notified whether or not you are invited to complete the second round of the application. The second-round application consists of several additional essays, letters of recommendation, and an interview with the Applications Committee (ApCom). Candidates chosen for the second round are encouraged to visit the college for several days in the winter, in order to interview in person and learn first-hand about what it is like to be a student at Deep Springs. However, if a visit is not possible, remote interviews can be arranged over the phone.
